Tart Cherry

Tart cherries, also known as sour cherries, are rich in phytonutrients, antioxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds. Tart cherry has been well researched to help support sleep, mostly due to its melatonin and tryptophan content.

Melatonin is a hormone known for its ability to help the body transition into sleep, with research showing it can help to shorten the time it takes to fall asleep.

Tryptophan is an essential amino acid and a precursor to melatonin; therefore, tryptophan can help the body increase melatonin production.

Research shows that the consumption of tart cherries is associated with a significant increase of melatonin in the body. Consumption is also associated with an increase in several global measures of sleep quality, including time spent in bed, total sleep time and total sleep efficiency. Consumption of tart cherry can also improve sleep patterns in those with insomnia.

Tart cherries also contain a rich source of special plant compounds called polyphenols, which act as antioxidants. They are especially high in a class of polyphenols called anthocyanins, a pigmented compound which gives fruits and vegetables their red, purple and blue hues.

These anthocyanins have been shown to hold powerful anti-inflammatory properties, which help to calm muscles, as well as relieve muscle pain or inflammation.

Research suggests that drinking tart cherry juice can help to alleviate pain and muscle soreness. In fact, the antioxidants in tart cherry have similar anti-inflammatory properties to that of several non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. Consider it ‘nature’s ibuprofen’, relaxing your body from head to toe to help deliver a good night’s sleep.

Also known as Indian ginseng or winter cherry, this herbal medicine is commonly used within traditional Ayurvedic medicine. It is an adaptogen, meaning it can improve your body’s ability to cope with and adapt to stress, stabilising mood and promoting vitality. It is sometimes referred to as a “royal herb”, due to its ability to act on multiple systems of the body, including the immune, neurological and reproductive system.

The main actives in ashwagandha are a group of compounds called withanolides, which hold the ability to alleviate stress within the body and protect cells from oxidative damage. The benefits of ashwagandha have been well-researched, with findings including a reduction in stress, anxiety and depression.

Because of its stress-alleviating properties, consumption of ashwagandha has been clinically researched to improve sleep quality and reduce symptoms commonly associated with sleep disorders such as insomnia. These include sleep onset latency (the time it takes to fall asleep), sleep efficiency, and sleep quality. Consumption of ashwagandha can also help to reduce levels of cortisol, also known as the stress hormone, which can interfere with sleep quality and duration if not controlled.

Passionflower has been used for many years, dating back to the 16th century when it was utilised for medicinal purposes. It grows throughout South America and is a part of the passiflora family, the same family as passionfruit. Passionflower is considered a nervine, meaning that it can help to support and act therapeutically on the nervous system to provide a sedative effect.

Consumption of this botanical can not only help to treat insomnia, but also the common symptoms that may affect sleep, including anxiety and certain forms of pain. This is because passionflower is thought to help increase the levels of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) in the body, a chemical that helps the brain regulate mood. It is an inhibitory neurotransmitter that can induce a calming effect on the body, thus assisting with sleep.

Clinical studies show that passionflower is effective in reducing stress and anxiety caused by lifestyle stressors, which ultimately can improve sleep and sleep quality. When compared to oxazepam, a drug that is usually used to treat anxiety, passionflower is shown to be equally as efficacious with fewer negative effects on function. A herbal mixture containing passionflower was also tried and tested to be effective in treating insomnia.

Saffron is a well-known spice that is commonly utilised for its fragrance and richness in colour. It is the dried stigma of the flower that grows from the Crocus sativus plant and has been widely used in traditional medicine for its therapeutic properties and health benefits.

It contains active compounds, such as safranal, which can have sleep-promoting properties. In fact, safranal has been found to reduce levels of cortisol by up to 44%, which can assist in reducing feelings of stress around bedtime. Saffron extract and its active compounds can also modulate the effects of serotonin, dopamine, norepinephrine, glutamate and GABA-A neurotransmitter which can have an impact on mood, stress, calmness and sleeping ability.

This clinically researched ingredient, therefore, has therapeutic benefits that can help those struggling with sleep. It has shown to be helpful in improving insomnia severity, as well as improving the duration of non-restorative sleep (sleep which is usually characterised as not sufficiently refreshing or restorative). It is also effective in improving the ease of getting to sleep, sleep duration and overall sleep quality.

Saffron also has the ability to improve stress levels, which can otherwise prevent or impact sleep. Studies found that the consumption of saffron reduced undesirable changes in heart rate which are usually caused by stress. Two Islands Nightcap contains saffron in a researched dose, which has been shown to cause a 60% decrease in overall stress levels, with effects being noticed in as little as 5 days.

Begin your day with a better sleep

Sleep, alongside exercise and a balanced diet, is one of three key pillars to health. Most adults require at least 7 hours of sleep each night, however busy schedules, caffeine overload and an anxious mind can often get in the way.

Getting enough sleep is imperative for health and performance, however not a reality for most adults in New Zealand. More than one third of adults in New Zealand are not getting enough sleep or experience some form of sleep problem.

Regular, good quality deep sleep schedules are important for brain functioning, emotional wellbeing and physical health. Many bodily functions occur when we sleep, including memory restoration, tissue repair and appetite regulation.

Not getting enough sleep can prevent these from occurring, as well as causing mood and concentration issues, increased ability to get sick and sleepiness during the day. Additionally, lack of sleep is associated with a greater risk of certain diseases such as obesity, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure and poor mental health.
