Wildcrafted Marshmallow Root

Althaea officinalis

Marshmallow is a herb rich in mucilage that helps to coat and soothe mucous membranes. Research suggests that the mucilage content creates a protective layer on the lining of the digestive tract, helping soothe and support gut lining integrity. It has also been shown to support healthy gut flora.

Marshmallow is often used as a herbal remedy due to its medicinal properties, commonly for the treatment of dry throats and coughs, as well as ulcers, burns, insect bites, gastritis, constipation and diarrhoea. While rich in high-antioxidant flavonoids, the most defining factor of marshmallow is that it has mucilage-rich roots. Mucilage is a viscous substance that can coat membranes in the throat and gut, therefore marshmallow can be used to soothe and treat irritation of the oral or gastrointestinal mucosa.

By containing both mucilage and flavonoids which are both rich in active compounds, marshmallow has become the subject of research in terms of investigating gastroprotective properties. Research has demonstrated that marshmallow extract has the potential to exhibit gastroprotective properties, with an ability to protect against and therefore reduce gastric ulcers in rats. Additionally, alongside anti-ulcer effects, marshmallow also demonstrated significant anti-inflammatory effects in rats, which are likely to help an irritated or inflamed gut and supports overall gut health.

Furthermore, marshmallow may also be of benefit to intestinal epithelial cells, with research indicating that marshmallow has a stimulating effect on the growth and activity of epithelial cells, overall supporting the regeneration of epithelial cells and promoting gut lining integrity.
