The combination of grape seed polyphenols, grape viniferin, licorice root extract, and vitamin C work synergistically to correct hyperpigmentation. This is achieved by regulating melanin production through inhibiting the tyrosinase enzyme, which produces melanin, the pigment in our skin responsible for dark spots and hyperpigmentation.
Grape seeds are a rich source of natural antioxidants, including polyphenols, anthocyanins, flavonoids and proanthicyanidins. In fact, grape seed extract is one of the richest sources of proanthocyanidins, therefore is commonly used for its antioxidant properties and anti-inflammatory properties, such as protecting from UV damage. Clinical research demonstrates that supplementing with grape seed extract has remarkable results for increasing the antioxidant status of the body, alongside improving hyperpigmentation and melasma in the skin. Proanthocyanidins from grape seeds have also been demonstrated to inhibit UV-induced melanin production in vitro.
Licorice root extract contains glabridin and glycyrrhizin which offer free radical scavenging abilities, alongside the ability to tighten skin to improve firmness and prevent ageing.
Vitamin C, a well-loved antioxidant, works in tandem with grape seed polyphenols, grape viniferin and licorice root extract to protect skin cells from oxidative damage to reduce dullness and achieve brightness, and is commonly reported to work synergistically with other skin-loving ingredients to reverse ageing, increasing skin radiance and density, as well as reducing wrinkles, skin roughness and hyperpigmentation. A supplement containing skin loving ingredients, including Vitamin C and grape seed extract, also saw visible and clinical improvements in signs of skin ageing, such as skin hydration and skin density.
Results from a clinical trial testing the effects of this novel blend indicates that consumption was associated with a reduction in age-related dark spots by 30%, sun-related dark spots by 40% as well as pregnancy-induced melasma (pregnancy mask) by 27%. More than 80% of users saw a visible difference in their skin after taking the product for 60 days, and results were seen after as little as 11 days.
