A member of the carrot family, fennel is an aromatic herb known for its licorice-like flavour and many health benefits. The entire plant can be eaten, from the bulb to its feathery stalks and antioxidant-rich seeds. While the herb is often used in salads, pasta dishes and to generally flavour meals, it has also traditionally been used as a galactagogue and carminative to support breast milk supply and relieve digestive complaints.

Fennel is frequently used by breastfeeding mothers and is often recommended by lactation consultations and herbalists to support a normal milk supply. Research has shown that supplementation of Fennel on its own, or in combination with other galactagogue herbs, may help to support breast milk volume, fat content and infant weight gain. While it is unclear exactly how Fennel works, it is thought that it may increase the hormone, prolactin, responsible for breast milk production, as well as support the milk ejection, or “let down”, reflex. As a phytoestrogen, Fennel may also provide hormonal support through binding to estrogen receptors and producing estrogen-like effects. Because of its carminative properties, Fennel is also traditionally thought to support infant colic when passed through breast milk.

Essential oils within Fennel have additionally been shown to help with gastrointestinal discomfort. As an anti-spasmodic herb, Fennel can support the relaxation of smooth muscles within the intestines and reduce intestinal gas. The herb is therefore a popular choice when it comes to settling abdominal pain and supporting overall digestive comfort.
