Make Your Day

Pea and Organic Hemp Protein

Protein plays an essential role in our body and is considered a macronutrient. This means that it is a nutrient that is required in large amounts by the body. In fact, every cell in the human body requires protein to function.

Not only does protein provide us with energy, but it also helps to form our muscles, hair, skin, nails, blood and organs. Consuming protein also helps to keep us satiated, meaning we stay fuller for longer.

Protein is made up of smaller building blocks called amino acids. There are 20 amino acids which help to build components of our body and supply energy. While some of these can be made up by the body, there are 9 amino acids which cannot be synthesised by the body and therefore must be consumed from the diet. Proteins such as pea and hemp protein contain all 9 essential amino acids and are therefore considered complete protein sources.

Together these proteins make up a strong complete amino acid profile and are perfect proteins for those who are vegetarian or vegan. Not only are pea and hemp protein both suitable alternatives to animal proteins such as meat or milk protein, but they are also both free of common allergens, including dairy and soy.

Research has discovered that the consumption of pea protein, a plant protein, had a greater effect on satiety when compared to animal proteins (see here and here). Pea protein is also equally as effective in the production of strength and muscle mass when compared to animal proteins like whey (see here and here). Hemp protein is also a great source of minerals, including iron, phosphorus and magnesium.

Organic Super Greens Powder

This blend of super greens including NZ Organic Barley Leaf, NZ Organic Wheat Leaf, NZ Spirulina and NZ Chlorella is packed full of nutrients including protein, essential vitamins and essential minerals. These super greens are rich in antioxidative phytochemicals such as polyphenols and flavonoids, which help to combat free radicals and oxidative damage caused by environmental pollution, toxic metals, UV exposure, pesticides and even stress.

Chlorella and spirulina powder are both types of algae known to be protein and micronutrient rich. Chlorella is a great natural source of protein, vitamin D2, vitamin B12, iron and potassium.

Due to its high mineral content, it has even been shown to help reverse the risk of anaemia in pregnant women as well as improve the vitamin B12 status of vegetarians and vegans. It has also been known to help remove heavy metals and other toxins in the body. Some of the other functions of chlorella include improving immune function and improving aerobic endurance.

Spirulina is a blue-green algae, popularly known after being used by NASA as a dietary supplement for astronauts on space missions. Like chlorella, it also has a high nutrient density. It is high in protein, vitamin B12, provitamin A, and minerals such as iron. Because of its high nutrient profile, it is often used in developing countries to treat children with mild to moderate malnutrition.

Spirulina also helps to increase healthy lactobacillus in the intestine, enabling the production of vitamin B6 to aid in energy release. Some other health functions of spirulina include a role in detoxifying, relieving allergy symptoms and inflammation, improving blood pressure and improving blood lipid and blood glucose levels.

Barley leaf and wheat leaf are the newly sprouted leaves of barley and wheat plants, allowing them to be rich in a number of amino acids, vitamins, minerals and plant nutrients that act as antioxidants. They are high in a compound called chlorophyll, sometimes known as the ‘blood of plants’ or ‘green blood’, due to its structural similarity to haemoglobin and ability to carry oxygen.

Wheat leaf therefore has been researched to be effective in treating blood deficiencies such as anaemia and thalassemia. The enzymes found in wheat leaf can also aid in digestion and help reduce digestive issues such as bloating, gas and abdominal discomfort.

Organic Reds Blend

Rich in anthocyanins and antioxidants, this bright red blend combines NZ Organic Beetroot powder, NZ Organic Blackcurrant powder and NZ Broccoli Sprout powder to provide powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory action.

NZ organic beetroot powder contains betalains, which are a class of red and yellow pigments found in plants, and are responsible for giving beetroot its bright red hue. Betalains are considered an antioxidant, which help to neutralise the oxidative damage caused by free radicals. This protects the cells in our bodies and fights the negative impacts of inflammation and ageing.

Beetroot is also a good source of dietary nitrates, with research showing its effectiveness in reducing blood pressure and improving vascular function. Beetroot powder is great for athletes, as it can support the supply of oxygen to working muscles and help improve blood flow, muscle function, stamina and recovery. Beetroot is also researched to have a role in protecting the liver.

Much like beetroot, NZ organic blackcurrant powder gets its deep purple hue from naturally occurring plant pigments called anthocyanins. These compounds have a large antioxidant function which strengthens and improves our immune response. New Zealand blackcurrants have an even greater anthocyanin content compared to those grown in other countries.

Another strong antioxidant that is found in blackcurrants is vitamin C, which strengthens antioxidant capacity and the immune defence. Vitamin C aids in several functions, such as assisting with iron absorption and promoting collagen production. Consumption of blackcurrants and their extracts have also been shown to improve physical performance, with research showing improvements in exercise performance after consumption. This is because the antioxidants help to reduce oxidative stress, reduce muscle damage and thus fast track functional recovery.

Broccoli sprout powder comes from a group of cruciferous vegetables, a group of vegetables which has been linked to a decreased risk for chronic disease. This includes cardiovascular disease and cancer, due to their anti-inflammatory and cancer-fighting effects. Broccoli sprouts are also rich in a group of compounds called glucosinolates.

While all cruciferous vegetables contain glucosinolates, broccoli sprouts have 10-100 times more than mature broccoli and most other cruciferous vegetables. When broccoli sprouts are consumed, the glucosinolates are converted into a powerful antioxidant called sulforaphane. Sulforaphane helps to combat free radicals in the body, with research showing that broccoli sprouts can help to reduce oxidative stress.

Naturally Derived Essential Vitamins and Minerals

This unique blend combines Holy Basil, Guava, Amla, Curry Leaves and Lemon to provide a rich source of nutrients for your daily vitamin and mineral needs. Being 100% naturally derived and non-synthetic, this ensures that the natural bioavailability of each vitamin and mineral is retained.

Amla, also known as Indian Gooseberry, alongside Guava and Lemon provides Protein Super Blend with a vibrant source of natural vitamin C which has been researched to have powerful antioxidant and immune-strengthening properties. Exercising, pollution and lifestyle factors such as smoking can cause free radicals in the body to create oxidative stress. Antioxidants help to neutralise this and prevent cell damage. Vitamin C also assists with iron absorption and collagen synthesis.

Holy Basil is an anti-inflammatory, rich in minerals as well as an adaptogen, meaning it can help your body manage and regulate all types of stress to promote mental balance.

Another special addition to the blend, Curry leaf, provides Protein Super Blend with a natural plant-based source of iron to restore vitality in our day to day. Iron is a key mineral used by our red blood cells to help transport oxygen around the body. Research finds that iron insufficiency is common for women in New Zealand, therefore it is an important mineral to be consuming to prevent tiredness and fatigue.

This blend also contains a rich source of B vitamins. Because they are not widely produced by our body, a daily supply of B vitamins is necessary to maintain proper body function. A key role of B vitamins is energy metabolism, however B vitamins have also been researched to regulate stress and mood. They play various other roles to keep our bodies healthy, with involvements in cell function and production, brain development, immune function, and maintaining the strength of our hair and nails.

Also rich in essential minerals including zinc, manganese and selenium, this blend is a great source of natural vitamins and minerals to give your body the natural daily nutrients it needs. Although Protein Super Blend is suitable for both men and women, this unique natural vitamin and mineral blend has been formulated to meet the nutritional needs of New Zealand women, ensuring 100% RDI of Iron and Iodine and 75% RDI of folate along with a wide range of other vitamins and minerals making it the ideal multivitamin for women.

Vegan Vitamin D

Two Islands Protein Super Blend contains a unique, vegan-friendly vitamin D3 with an enhanced bioavailability when compared to vitamin D2. This vegan, vitamin D3
is sourced from non-GMO algae and has undergone testing to show it is
chemically identical to vitamin D3 derived from animal products.

Vitamin D, affectionately called the sunshine vitamin, can be synthesised in the skin through UV exposure and is essential in various systems within the body, from bone health to immune function and mood regulation. It plays an important part in building strong bones due to its role in calcium absorption. Research shows that bone health is greatly improved in those who consume vitamin D daily. Without it, our bones can become thin and weak which increases the risk of breaks or fractures.

Vitamin D has also been linked to improved immune function. Alongside having anti-inflammatory and immunoregulatory properties, a main function of vitamin D is to help activate T cells, also known as killer cells, so that they can detect and destroy foreign pathogens that may enter our bodies. Supplementing with vitamin D has been linked to an improvement in immunity for illnesses such as influenza, tuberculosis and upper respiratory tract infections. An adequate vitamin D status is also associated with reduced severity of clinical symptoms and outcomes from COVID-19.

Vitamin D also plays an important role in mood regulation. Studies have found an association between low levels of vitamin D and the presence and severity of depressive disorders. Supplementing with vitamin D has been researched to help lessen the symptoms of depression, anxiety and mental health outcomes.

Natural vitamin D can be consumed in two different forms, vitamin D2 and vitamin D3. Research shows that vitamin D3, also known as cholecalciferol, is more potent than vitamin D2 and is more effective in raising the levels of active vitamin D that can be utilised by the body. Most sources of dietary vitamin D3 come from animal foods, such as fatty fish, beef liver and egg yolks. Diets low in vitamin D3 are therefore more common for those who avoid animal foods such as vegetarians and vegans. Furthermore, vitamin D consumption is often low, especially during winter seasons where sunlight exposure is minimal.

The New Zealand Adult Nutrition Survey found that 27% of adults have some form of vitamin D deficiency with levels below the recommended amounts. While vegan-friendly vitamin D supplements traditionally only contain vitamin D2, Two Islands Protein Super Blend contains a vegan source of vitamin D3, with one serve containing 500% of your recommended daily intake.

Vitamin C

Vitamin C is an essential water-soluble vitamin required by the body. Its most well-known functions include being a powerful antioxidant, meaning that it can neutralise the effects of free radicals to reduce damage to our cells and bodies. This antioxidant action also allows vitamin C to strengthen our natural immune defence allowing the ability to fight infections and inflammation.

This vitamin is naturally present in most fruits and vegetables, but especially high in citrus fruits such as lemons, oranges and grapefruit, as well as capsicums, kiwifruit and berries. Whilst rare, severe deficiency in vitamin C can lead to a disease called scurvy, historically seen in sailors on long voyages who experienced bleeding gums, poor wound healing and damaged bones.

A common use of vitamin C is to help defend against the common cold. Research has found regular doses of vitamin C daily are effective in limiting the severity and length of the common cold.

Aside from its antioxidative effects, vitamin C also has other useful roles in the body, such as aiding in collagen production and assisting with iron absorption. This makes vitamin C an important vitamin for those who may have low iron absorption or increased iron requirements, such as pregnant women and vegans. Research shows that the consumption of non-haem iron at the same time with 25-100mg of vitamin C can enhance its absorption by 4-fold.

Two Islands Protein Super Blend is packed full of ingredients naturally rich in vitamin C, including NZ organic blackcurrant powder, NZ broccoli sprout, amla, guava and lemon offering over 1000% of your RDI per serve.

B Vitamins

The B vitamins are a group of essential vitamins that play a large and varied role in our body. Two Islands Protein Super Blend contains 7 essential B vitamins including B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, B7 (biotin) and B9 (folate). B vitamins are not naturally produced or stored in our bodies, therefore it is important that we consume an adequate daily supply from a balanced diet.

Most of the B vitamins are involved in energy metabolism and the conversion of macronutrients into other components to supply the body with energy and supporting our daily energy levels. They are also involved in brain functioning as well as the synthesis and repair of genetic material, with research discovering that B vitamins are effective in helping to reduce and prevent cognitive decline caused by ageing. The consumption of all essential B vitamins has also been shown to help reduce stress and improve overall mood.

Aside from energy metabolism, B vitamins each have individual roles in the body as well. Vitamin B1 has a role in nerve processes, and helps to support the function of the brain, muscles and heart. Vitamin B3 is needed for the healthy development and functioning of cells, while vitamins B5 and B9 are necessary for blood cell production. Vitamin B6 works to help support brain development and immune function and vitamin B7, also known as biotin, plays an important role in the strengthening of our nails and hair.

Deficiency in the B vitamins may cause a loss of energy and feelings of weakness or fatigue. B vitamins also act as cofactors for enzymes, therefore low supplies may reduce the ability to carry out some essential bodily processes. A daily supply of all essential B vitamins can therefore support an array of things, ranging from mood support, energy production, immune and nervous system support, blood cell production and the maintenance of healthy and strong hair and nails.

Folate is a B vitamin, more specifically vitamin B9, and is important for energy production, cell growth, making genetic material, supporting the nervous system and reproduction. Because of its involvement with red blood cell production, deficiencies in folate can lead to a type of anaemia called megaloblastic anaemia, resulting in fatigue, muscle weakness and irritability.

Folate and the other B vitamins, such as vitamin B6, play a crucial role in breaking down homocysteine, a type of amino acid. Deficiencies in B vitamins such as folate can lead to a build-up of homocysteine, which can cause harmful effects on the body. This includes oxidative stress, inflammation and possible increased risk of cardiovascular complications such as stroke. However, research has found here and here that high levels of folate in the blood is associated with a reduced risk of stroke and coronary artery disease.

Folate is also an essential nutrient required for the healthy growth and development of babies in early pregnancy. This makes it one of the most important vitamins for women to be consuming, as insufficient folate intakes pre-pregnancy can result in birth defects, whilst consumption of folate before and during pregnancy can have up to a 72% protective effect against neural tube defects. Women in New Zealand however are currently not consuming enough folate to avoid this risk.

Ensuring that we consume enough folate can help provide vitality and energy and allow us to support a healthy nervous system and reproductive system.

Two Islands Protein Super Blend contains 75% of your RDI from a wholefood source.

Iron deficiency is a common concern amongst women in New Zealand, with 15.4% of women aged 31-50 years old having an inadequate iron intake. A study on female iron status conducted in Auckland, New Zealand also found that 55.8% of the participants had insufficient iron stores.

Iron however is an essential mineral that you don’t want to be deficient in. It plays an important role in oxygen delivery, forming a component of our red blood cells to help carry oxygen to our brain, heart, muscles and all other parts of the body. For those that are deficient in iron, symptoms may include decreased physical work capacity, tiredness, mental exhaustion and may even lead to anaemia. Iron is also necessary to support a healthy immune system as it is involved in fighting infections.

There are two forms of iron that we can consume from our diets, haem iron and non-haem iron. Haem iron is more easily absorbed but can only be consumed from animal sources. In contrast, non-haem iron is found in plant foods, with rich sources being beans, lentils and some cereal grains.

Certain groups of people such as vegans and vegetarians therefore may struggle to get enough iron in their diet. Females also have higher iron requirements due to their menstrual cycle causing monthly blood loss, and thus loss of iron.

While iron tablets are often an easy solution, some find that these cause issues with digestion and feeling blocked up. This is a result of iron’s low absorption rate, causing a substantial amount of iron to remain in the gut, resulting in discomfort. The absorption of iron however can be boosted when consumed alongside vitamin C.

Two Islands Super Blend contains curry leaf, offering a plant-based source of non-haem iron, with added vitamin C to aid in absorption for energy, vitality and reduced feelings of discomfort.

Iodine from NZ Kelp Powder

Kelp is a collection of edible brown seaweeds which contain a natural source of nutrients including dietary fibre, vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. Due to its nutrient composition, kelp consumption is associated with a reduced risk of chronic diseases such as heart disease.

Kelp is also naturally rich in the mineral iodine. Iodine is used in our bodies to help support thyroid function. This includes the synthesis of thyroid hormones which assist with growth, brain development and metabolism.

Research shows that supplementation of iodine is associated with greater cognitive improvements. Iodine is also especially important for foetal and neonatal brain development, hence why iodine requirements are increased during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

New Zealand soil however is low in iodine, meaning that fruits and vegetables grown in our soil are poor sources of iodine. A 2014-15 study found that some groups of women in New Zealand have a mild iodine deficiency. The re-emergence of iodine deficiency in New Zealand is believed to be a consequence of declining use of iodized salt and an increased consumption of processed foods not made with iodized salt.

Our bodies do not produce iodine, therefore it is important that we get it from the foods we eat. Many common foods that are rich in iodine however, are not vegan friendly. This includes seafood, milk and eggs. One serving of Two Islands Protein Super Blend contains 100% of your recommended daily intake (RDI) of iodine to support healthy thyroid function.

What is the difference between Protein Super Blend and your Pea Protein Powder?

Both our Pea Protein Powders and Protein Super Blend offer a high dose of plant-based protein per serve. Our Pea Protein Powders are a blend of 4 ingredients or less providing between 18.8 and 19.7g protein per serve. They come in a range of 3 great tasting flavours and simply provide supplementary protein only to your diet.

Protein Super Blend is a comprehensive daily nutrition formula boasting a wide range of plant-based essential vitamins, minerals, protein and fibre. Think of it as your supercharged protein shake meets multivitamin. It combines both pea and organic hemp protein providing 20g of protein per serve, along with antioxidant-rich organic greens and reds, essential wholefood sourced vitamins and minerals, and prebiotic apple fibre. Protein Super Blend provides comprehensive daily nutrition to support energy, stress, mood, immunity, digestion, lean muscle and skin health.

What is the difference between pea and hemp protein?

With pea protein and hemp protein both containing all 9 essential amino acids, they can be considered complete protein sources on their own. However, by combining the two, we can achieve a more nutrient dense and well-rounded source of protein. For instance, pea protein is relatively higher in lysine, an amino acid which helps to support nutrient absorption and the immune system, and is an amino acid that hemp protein is lower in. Hemp protein however is higher in methionine, which is necessary for liver health and cell function, while pea protein is lower in this.

Pea protein is effective at satisfying hunger, and can be considered a more comprehensive protein source, with more amino acids per 100g compared to hemp protein. It is a greater source of branched chain amino acids (BCAAs) (such as valine, leucine and isoleucine), which are known for their effectiveness in stimulating muscle growth and repair.

Pea protein may contain more amino acids per 100g, however hemp protein is a good source of fibre and contains a wider nutrient content. Each serving of hemp protein includes heart-healthy fats such as omega-3 fatty acids, as well as nutrients including iron, calcium, phosphorous, magnesium, vitamin B1, vitamin B2 and vitamin E.

Together, these proteins complement each other to give a comprehensive supply of amino acids for satiety and muscle building, as well as fibre and nutrients.

Can I use Protein Super Blend as a meal replacement?

We always recommend getting your nutrition from food in the first instance. Dietary supplements should be only ever be supplementary to and not a replacement for a balanced and varied whole food diet. However on the rare occasion you simply don’t have time to stop to eat a complete meal, some people will build upon Protein Super Blend by adding a source of healthy fat and complex carbohydrate.
