Tremella Mushroom

Tremella fuciformis

Rich in polysaccharides that retain moisture to naturally hydrate the skin, Tremella mushroom exhibits similar activity to hyaluronic acid to keep skin looking plump, youthful and glowing. Research suggests that Tremella mushrooms also possess antioxidant properties to protect against cellular damage, preventing ageing and deterioration of the skin matrix.

Tremella mushroom has long been used in China for achieving smooth, radiant and youthful skin. It has been used since 200 AD mostly by royalty or the wealthy. With its white appearance, jelly-like texture and beneficial properties, this mushroom is also known as white jelly mushroom, snow mushroom or beauty mushroom. In traditional Chinese medicine, tremella mushrooms are used to help restore and balance ‘yin’ within the body, alongside lowering inflammation and removing excess heat by replenishing fluid within the body.

Tremella mushroom contains bioactive polysaccharides which hold onto and retain water, allowing it to hydrate the skin for a glowing and dewy complexion. Tremella mushroom promotes hydration in the same way as hyaluronic acid. In fact, constituents of the tremella mushroom allows it to retain up 500 times its weight in water. Because of this, tremella mushrooms are largely beneficial for helping support skin hydration.

Extracts of tremella mushroom can help to increase the synthesis of Type 1 procollagen and suppress melanin production to help prevent wrinkles and hyperpigmentation caused by UV damage. Tremella mushroom polysaccharides also stimulate the production of superoxide dismutase (SOD), which is a super antioxidant enzyme that promotes the production and maintenance of new, healthy, and youthful looking skin. SOD helps to protect and regenerate skin to prevent wrinkling and sagging, backed by research that demonstrates an increase in SOD activity following UV exposure to skin cells.

In addition, research has indicated that tremella mushroom polysaccharides can exhibit anti-photoaging effects. Tremella mushroom polysaccharides were found to reduce UV-induced water and collagen losses from the skin, as well as increase type 1 collagen production. UV-induced skin alterations and collagen breakdown was also alleviated after oral treatment of these polysaccharides. Polysaccharides from tremella mushroom have also exhibited antioxidant activity through free radical scavenging to help support anti-ageing.
